At first glance, I’ll admit I was scared of the Droid X. Why is this thing so freaking huge?? was my initial thought as I palmed the screen. However, after five days with the Droid X, I have come to this conclusion: I am definitely man enough to handle this big boy.

Are you as turned on by this statement as I am? The Droid X is pure smartphone sex.
Here’s my review after only five days of using the phone:
The Pros:
- As I already mentioned, this phone is massive. With a 4.3 inch edge-to-edge screen, the Droid X makes reading e-books, websites and emails easy. Watching movies and viewing pictures is also convenient with the large screen.
- Like all Android’s, the Droid X has several pages to store apps and other fun widgets. Besides the main page, there are six other pages to fill up.
- The camera (8.0 megapixel) has auto-focus and a dual LED flash so needless to say it works pretty well. It has some nice effects as well and the zoom works like a charm… I could almost take pictures of people in the opposite high-rise (not that I would). This picture was taken out of my window completely zoomed out.
- The Android Apps! I cannot express how much I love the apps. This is probably just because I’ve never had a smartphone before and I am a social media freak–however– I’ll list some notable apps that Droid users should download.
- Adobe Reader, Kindle Reader, Pandora, Sudoku, Craigslist checker, NBA Game Time, Steelers News (oh yes) and obviously Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, LinkedIn and Yelp
- There are various backgrounds pre-loaded to choose from.
- Great HD-video!
- Comes with FM radio and the Android music player.
The Cons:
- There was a really simple solution to this but I swear I could not figure it out until today. The notification sound auto-programmed to the phone is “Droiddddddd“. It’s spit out in the this really creepy robot voice and while I first thought it was hilarious, I was haunted in the middle of the night when my phone would go off right next to my ear. “Droiddddddd“. Now I can sleep in peace.
- One thing that really annoys me is how the contacts are set-up. When I moved all of my old contacts to the Droid X through Backup Assistant on Verizon, I thought it was weird that I had over 600 contacts saved. It turns out that with the Droid X, unless you specify every time which “group” of contacts you want, you will have everyone from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc in your contacts! I mean, I’m sure this will be useful if I need to call someone and do not have their number…but at the moment it is excessive and a bit creepy.
- Battery life. I find it hard to complain since my old phone died before noon unless I carried a charger with me but I find myself longing for more battery life with the Droid X.
- The recommended Social Networking app that Motorola is pressing (kind of like Motoblur but very limited) is annoying. This app tries to combine your social networking sites into one steady feed but it results in a slow, never refreshed widget. And I want to destroy it. I personally enjoy my separate accounts on separate apps. And besides, the Social Networking app does not account for LinkedIn or Foursquare!
- Minimal freezing has occurred with my phone and it scares the hell out of me. I’m hoping it is just because I have overloaded my phone with apps. Along with this problem, I feel the browser could be faster.
Overall, I give the Droid X a B-. It is a beautiful phone and I feel that it has comfortable usability. The battery life and semi-slow browser cut the rating down from an A because I was really looking forward to day-long battery life. Perhaps I am just a heavy user. Either way, if you are looking for a new phone, I recommend you check the Droid X out!

I got this phone for work, and I love it. At first the size was a bit intimidating, but after a few days of use, I quickly adjusted. I would definitely recommend this phone!

I got a Droid Eris for cheap about two months ago — basically, we got 2 for 1 since the X was about to come out.
I love the Eris, with two complaints: a) no flash on the camera, and the autofocus sucks. b) Sometimes you get into an app — I find it happens most often with FB and Gmail — and neither the back-arrow nor the home button will take you anywhere, even if you’re pressing so hard it feels like you’re going to crack the case.
Otherwise, I love it. And for battery life, if I set syncing settings so that I’m not constantly syncing and I don’t do a ton of Web stuff, I’ll get 18 to 24 hours easy.
Also, if you’re a PC user who likes iTunes, you can put DoubleTwist on your PC and manage music/video on your Droid as if it were an iPod. It comes with an 8-gig memory card.
The DoubleTwist sounds intriguing… that’s for bringing it to my attention, I’m going to check it out! The battery life is something I need to look into… maybe there is a better setting. 18-24 hours would be fantastic! Sorry you are having some problems with the Droid Eris. Happy wednesday!

I have the HTC EVO and I can say i really enjoy the phone. I switched from the iphone and for no other reason than to save money. To my surprise, i find my evo much more customizable. I love the screen size, love the camera and love love love QIK. If you haven’t checked it out, please do. It is an awesome way to capture video and send it to Twitter, facebook, you tube and emails if you so desire.
Glad you are loving your phone. Technology is great. It brings us closer together, but in some ways alienates us.

I’ve only heard great things about the HTC Evo and if you love it more than the iphone, all the better! I’m not sure what QIK is but I am definitely going to look into it if it makes social media mire effective. I agree that technology is a great way to connect people which is why it bothers me when people claim social media and the like are ruining personal relationships.

I wasn’t serious, not about the sass anyway. The Touch really is horrible, so even if the Droid sucked it would still be tenfold better. And I wouldn’t expect you to know this, but I’m something like a professional textfighter. It’s a profession that’s popular in Holland, but it’s catching in the states, too. So, watchout, sucka…I ain’t scared!

The Droid X and EVO 4G are just too big in my opinion, but great post and thanks for sharing. I’ve been thinking of changing from iPhone to Android, so it was good to get a actual users opinion.

My boyfriend has a droid and I say that since it knows everything, that means he knows everything too. Which he uses to his advantage with arguments because he’ll bring it out and google it. I hate those little noises it makes when there are updates, it woke me up too when I slept and it’s pretty annoying!
Haha yes the notifications can be intense. Especially when the “droidddd” noise goes off in a meeting by mistake….haha.

I’m due for an upgrade soon and have been considering the Droid since I’m with Verizon, so this post was perfect for me. This will be my first foray into smart phones and I’m very excited. I’ve read all the comments and so far no one has actually mentioned talking on the phone…is that part user friendly too? Why’d you skip the Droid Incredible? I’m considering an upgrade to a smartphone soon on my Verizon acct. Droid X, number 1, just seems way too big. You need a separate case for that thing???
Great question — first of all, the Droid Incredible was not available until August and the condition of my last phone was way too ridiculous for me to hold out. However, I did get to play around with the Droid Incredible for a few days when a friend came by and I loved it. The Droid X is pretty big but I think it is great for social media. I can recommend the Droid Incredible as a great phone and it has HTC which I personally loved. I hope you find the right phone!

I like the size of that phone! I’ve been thinking of getting a new one. I got my wife the Jitterbug recently and it’s a beauty, but I want something a bit more overstated. I considered the I-Phone until Consumer Reports did not recommend it, so this Droid-X might fit the bill.

I was going to originally get the new one too but then AT&T cancelled my order three times without explanation. And let’s face it — I have a love affair with Verizon’s service.

I am looking for a good smart phone so this was a timely post! How long is the battery life? I was turn on by the idea of having an e-reader in a phone, but not if using means I’ll only have a couple of hours of battery life.

Great blog, my girlfriend and I got our Droid Xs on release day and absolutely love the phone. There was a software update last night (july 20th) which supposedly fixed over 20 bugs with the phone.
But to be honest, we didnt ever notice the bugs that supposedly the software update fixed. which the website said that would be the case for people not experiencing problems with their phone.
It was justtheir way of making sure that consumers got the best out of their phone I guess. Something that Apple doesnt seem to want to do for their people these days.
I absolutely live on my phones. In fact i used to carry two phones, a iphone and a blackberry for 3 years. I only carry the Droid X now.
Its hands down a better phone than the iphone who continues to put out the same product with no real new features. The last great feature the iphone added was the ability to send MMS messages and take videos last year.
Personally I can only think of one CON with this phone. The inability to cut and paste everything. It wont let you do that on every screen like a blackberry or iphone. But it could be somethingthat is fixed when the new Android 2.2 software comes out in August.
I learn more and more new features about this phone everyday which blows my mind. Like the feature that allows you to go into each contact and set a setting that forces any call from that contact to go directly to voice mail. Thats a cool feature for annoying people that you dont want to talk to.
Then I just learned today that it has the new “swype” technology that allows you to compose texts or emails by just dragging your finger to each letter to spell a word instead of pressing each key.
I hope you continue to handle your “manly phone” and enjoy it. I definitely have.

I think that Apple is giving everyone free cases which is not only going to cost millions for the quarter but is not solving the problem. I wasn’t aware that Motorola put out a fix for dome software issues but that’s great! I didn’t find any complaints but I know some people had issues. I cannot wait for the new froyo system to cone out- -its going to be incredible. I find new things on this phone everyday too and I haven’t even explored half of it! Glad we both fell in love. It was $199.99 on Verizon but I had an upgrade so it was only $100. I think it is worth the price!
You probably have already learned this by now but turning off wifi and gps will help you big time. Verizon’s coverage is so great that i have no need for wifi ever. And turning screen brightness down helps a bit as well. These tips have helped my smart phones last a while on a charge. Congrats on your new hobby!

A couple things. First of all, the Droid X isn’t nearly as big as I thought it would be. I read every preview for the phone before it came out and they all made it look HUGE! When I finally saw it in the store on release day…it looked so small! It’s really not that big and it’s very thin, so it feels really good in the hand. Second, it usually take 10-15 charges to get your battery up to full power. So, since you’ve only had it for 5 days, you should get optimum battery life after a few more charges and that should improve.

My sis just got her first smart phone too a HTC “insert cool sounding name here”. She loves it and loves the Android store. Do you have iTunes syncing to the device? She’s on at me to help her but I’m not sure its possible? Any help would be excellent, my replies of ‘get an iPhone’ aren’t overly helping matters.

Good review – I’ve had the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 android phone for a couple of months now and keep meaning to review it; I love it.
If you’re looking for good apps, I recommend Springpad – http://www.springpadit.com – as a ‘memory’ app. Up until today I used Evernote but Springpad is just so much more intuitive, especially for Android users.

Wow, your all just jealous of the iphone’s overwhelming performance and beauty. Both the iphone 3gs and the iphone 4. Hows that Facetime workin out on Android? Iphone 4 has the best display, immense power, more and better apps, and just a way better smartphone experience.
Don’t even bother bringing up the crap about the death grip. I have the iphone 4 and I have not dropped a call anywhere regardless of how I hold it, without a bumper.

I respect your opinions and I was originally going to switch to AT&T for the new iPhone but they cancelled my order three times so I figured it wasn’t meant to be.
AT&T and Apple managed to get caught with their pants down again with the iphone 4 orders. It took way too long to receive mine. I personally like to just walk in the store and take the device home with me the same day. Didn’t happen here.
Why did they cancel your order? I think that would have been enough to make me walk away as well.
I would have attempted to get one at the store i my pre-order had gone through but then again I don’t think I would have waited in that line all night in the rain! The only reason I can assume they canceled my order so many times is the whole pre-order crash. But I tried a few days later and it still didn’t go through so I was just frustrated. I don’t want to deal with AT&T even if Apple’s customers service is great.
I would have gone to the store to pick up my pre-order (if it had gone through) but I would not have wanted to stand in the rain all night… and I have work so I can’t really see my boss saying “oh hey go take off to pick up the iphone!”. I think AT&T canceled my order so many times because of the pre-order back-up and crash. But I did try again a few days later and it still canceled so who knows. I don’t want to deal with AT&T even if Apple has great customer service.

Yeah I could but for what I pay my carrier provides everything. I get emails, text, unlimited phones calls anywhere and I even can send pics for free. I am with Boost. But they do have the Motorala 2 Have you tried the Motorala 2 yet?

Glad to see you enjoy your Droid X. I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about this phone at my job recently but, never knew what it looked like until now. Just to confirm, it doesn’t have a front facing camera right? If I wasn’t so wrapped into Apple & AT&T’s finger tips I’d be back on an Android phone. My main gripe with Droid phone’s is the battery life. I had the Nexus One & while it proved to be a great phone, I found it dying on me very often.
On the flip side, the customization opportunities are endless which is a plus for us(the consumers). Hope you enjoy your Droid X for years to come…or until a better Android phone is released. lol
No front facing camera I’m afraid but still a great camera! And yeah, I’m hoping for an improved battery life in a few days after I charge it more…but who knows if it will work! Do you have the new iPhone?
Not yet. I’m getting it tomorrow actually. Some guy in AT&T told me that instead of waiting on that 3 week waiting list with apple he could get the phone for me the same day or two days later after he places an order.
So until not I’m using my 3GS but, respectively I can admit that I’d end up going broke between the android marketplace and the app store.
I’m sure you get a lot of haters because of your phone right? Well, anything beats a blackberry or an HTC HD2.

I would like to have a Droid, save for the required $30 data Plan. I have an enV touch and while the software is a slightly buggy, I love it, (4/5 stars).
Can’t wait for the Droid to get better for the day I can afford it. And I can’t wait for batteries in general to get better.
Agreed with the batteries. I would love a week long battery but that is hoping for a miracle haha. My brother has the enV Touch and he likes it but I can’t say much about it. My Voyager was a dead-beat. Have a great day!

Apparently the battery life will get better after a few days of charging it just overnight which I think makes sense. Right now it lasts me about 8-10 hours of use (SM updates, calling, texting, surfing)… but I am kind o a heavy user. I’ll let you know if the battery life improves in a few days!

Great review; I know I’m the 100th person to say that, but gotta give props where they’re due! There’s something very uplifting about your style of writing.
I own an iPhone and I can’t help but wonder what these smart phones are up to when I find myself depending on its presence for everyday living. I use the Google map App to plan my driving around California, I use the voice recorder to practice music and conduct interviews, I check email, YouTube, weather, texts, news, calendars, invitations… What would we do without them? I’m glad that you’ve found a smart phone love in the Droid X, and I guess these days we have to choose our ‘bots wisely. But my paranoid side keeps asking “this phone is keeping a detailed list of everything I do, everywhere I go, everyone I talk to, and multiple components of my identity; do I want AT&T to have all that information?”

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I am always thinking… “why does my location need to be on everything?” Don’t get me wrong… I love Foursquare but for things like Twitter, why have your location on? And I am already dependent on this baby after five days of using it. I always have it in hand and I find myself so useless without it sometimes. It would be interesting to see what kind of information they can pull up from our accounts. It’s already creepy enough that I can go through my contacts and get everyone’s information that I am friends with on FB or twitter. But hey, I trust most of the world. I’m glad you have found trust in the world, because honestly I am getting suspicious of this new technology. Why is my iPhone asking for my location every time I take a picture? Is it trying to create a visual map of my life, and if so, do I get a say in it? Does it take down my location at other times, and just doesn’t ask me? And why are people not allowed to use their phones and cameras to take pictures of the most important events happening right now (i.e. the BP Oil Spill)? With all of these “smart super android” devices roaming the world in our pockets, you’d think the public would be allowed to create something more useful than iPhone fart apps (http://social.venturebeat.com/2008/12/23/iphone-fart-app-pulls-in-nearly-10000-a-day/), but still the only device out there that allows its consumers to tinker with its capabilities is the Google Nexus One. Maybe it’s selling so poorly because China seems to be able to hack its way into anything Google makes (not that Apple’s any better: every smart phone made by Apple is built in China, so you better believe they’ve got ways into our personal lives). I think it’s about time I wrote a blog post about this: I’ll keep you updated, but I wanted to thank you again for sparking my interest in this issue.

that’s a good and simple personal review. i somehow liked the design of Droid X too. maybe it’s about the screen real estate, or the fact that it has a super-slim and minimalistic design, something like the iPhone4, but of a different class.

whats it like in comparison to the Magic or any other droid? im in love with my HTC Magic. Its borderline sexual. Good review though! 😀

Hey! The Droid Incredible is the only other droid that I have really gotten to use for a long time and I loved it. It is on backorder until 8/3 I think and it has been sold out for quite some time so I feel that speaks for its capabilities. I really enjoy HTC phones and one of my coworkers has the Magic and they love it as well! I had the LG Voyager before and there is absolutely no comparison to the Android system. And hey, if a phone is borderline sexual, it’s a keeper 😉

Love the android. I’ve got a HTC Hero; yea I jumped too soon and should have waited for the Evo. But it’s hands down better than the Blackberry. Used to have phone envy with my wife’s Blackberry, but now the envy belongs to my wife.
One con I see is that with Android updates and app updates, your current phone may not be viable for more than 1-1/2 years before it can’t keep up. The Hero was out for awhile and the rumor is won’t be upgradeable to newer Android versions after 2.0.
Wish it had better battery life too, but I found that the application “app killer” can give me a good 4 more hours a day.
Really? That’s interesting… I wonder if that really is the case. I know the Android 2.2 (Froyo) is coming out soon. And I’m going to look into “app killer” right now, an extra four hours a day would be perfect!

Maybe down the line. I feel each one has its own market though so it’s a hard call. I think it also just depends on who is bringing out the innovative phone. Updates are great but what is really going to change the way we use phones?
Thanks for the review. I don’t have a smartphone yet but will be in the market soon. All these phones are so challenging to compare. I was thinking the iphone but other then the “everyone has it, I should too” reason I don’t have anything else to compare it to. I will look into the Droid.
Shopping for a smartphone can be a real challenge especially if you are willing to change carriers. Way too many options! Besides reading reviews, I would actually play around with your friends phones for a bit to see if you can see a difference. Hope you find the right phone for you!

So it’s full circle- is it? From the massive mobiles of the 80s to the tiny modern ones to the big mobiles again…. lol…. it must be the video streaming capability of the phones and drive the demand for bigger phones, thus bigger screens….

This was a good review, and helped me further my desicion in getting the x. Coincidentally, I have the voyager too and it’s hanging, literally, by one hinge (lmaoo it took in alot of love).
